In April, California’s six regional chapters of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) formed an independent nonprofit that united the separate entities into a singular unit, now referred to as USGBC California. It’s serendipitous that this unification came just weeks ahead of USGBC California’s 23rd annual California Green Building Conference, where leaders in the sustainable building design, construction, and operations will gather for a day of presentations focused on this year’s theme: unification.
“The underlying theme of this year’s conference is unification, and we are at an important moment in an election year where we can bring together green building leaders from across the state to strengthen our connections and learn from one another,” Ben Stapleton, former executive director for USGBC-LA, now executive director for USGBC California, shared in a statement.
The California Green Building Conference will take place on May 23 at The Beehive in South Los Angeles. Here, participants can attend 16 workshop sessions, 30 lunch talks, and 20 case studies.
The keynote speakers at this year’s event are Kate Gordon, a visiting scholar at UC Berkeley Haas School of Business and former senior advisor to U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm; and Obi Kaufmann, a California-based author who writes about ecology and geography. Remarks will also be made by Peter Templeton, president and CEO of USGBC; and Martin Muoto, cofounder and CEO of SoLa Impact, a property management firm that oversees residential buildings and The Beehive.
Several programs scheduled for presentation at the California Green Building Conference are centered on issues and concerns that lean more regionally specific, among these a session on wildfire mitigation and thinking about how to educate the entertainment industry about sustainability.
Other topical subjects of interest for architects and designers include talks that touch upon material waste, zero-emissions, and electrification.
