In Southern California, architecture and interiors firm ShubinDonaldson, has announced it will now go by Donaldson + Partners, following the departure of long-term founding partner Russell Shubin. The firm was founded in 1991 and operates out of two offices located in Los Angeles and Santa Barbara. It has a particular leaning toward the design of contemporary, Modernist-influenced residences in and around Southern California.

The firm shared in an announcement that after thirty years practicing with the studio, Shubin is leaving “to pursue other endeavors.” In a statement shared on its website the firm added: “As Donaldson + Partners, we remain committed to delivering the same extraordinary architecture we have been privileged to create as ShubinDonaldson. We wish Russell Shubin all the best as he departs for new endeavors and thank him for his contribution to the success of ShubinDonaldson.”

Spearheading its “ongoing evolution,” the firm will continue to be helmed by founding partner Robin Donaldson, but he will be joined by Mark Hershman. Hershman will run the Los Angeles studio, while Donaldson will remain at the firm’s Santa Barbara office alongside Dr. F. Myles Sciotto. The team facilitates D+ Workshop, an arm of the studio that explores design processes and methods.

Recent projects from the firm include a restoration of Richard Neutra’s Mariners’ Medical Arts building in Newport Beach. Several architectural elements of the midcentury structure were maintained, while others, including three water features from the 1970s, were full restored. The residential portfolio also includes the art-rich Hill House, number of workspaces, offices, and a film studio.
