May 2020: Facades
AN’s May issue takes stock of changes happening across the country. We profile a movement among architects and designers to fabricate personal protective equipment for medical professionals dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic, and we mark the loss of one of the profession’s most important voices, Michael Sorkin. Our feature on Los Angeles looks at the new cultural buildings rising around Hancock Park, and Destination Crenshaw, a multifaceted project that highlights the cultural contributions of Black Angelenos.
The facades products supplement dissects some of the most innovative building skins in the country, like that of New York’s Bloomberg Building (home of The Shed) and California’s Lucas Museum of Art. The section also features an analysis of the trend toward exoskeletons and interviews with leading facade engineers.
An illustrated feature celebrates the life of William Menking, AN’s cofounder and longtime editor in chief with a walk through his colorful career.
